How to Wash a Down Sleeping Bag

Step-by-step guide to properly clean and care for down sleeping bags to extend their lifespan and maintain loft.

How to Wash a Down Sleeping Bag

Down insulation loses loft and warmth when exposed to moisture, dust, and body oils. Regular cleaning—typically once every few years—restores performance and extends your bag's lifespan by a decade or more. Improper washing can permanently damage the down clusters, so method matters.

What You Need

  • Nikwax Down Wash (or equivalent down-specific cleaner)
  • Washing machine (front-loader, not top-loader)
  • Dryer with low-heat setting
  • Tennis balls or wool dryer balls
  • Large mesh laundry bag (optional but recommended)

Why Nikwax Down Wash: Standard detergents strip the oils that keep down clusters lofty and water-repellent. Down-specific cleaners preserve these oils while removing dirt and sweat.

The Process

1. Read the Label

Check your bag's care instructions. Some manufacturers have specific requirements. If your bag is baffled (compartments prevent down shifting), you have more flexibility. If not, be extra cautious during agitation.

2. Pre-treat Stains

Spot-clean any visible stains with diluted Nikwax Down Wash and a soft brush. Let sit for 15 minutes. This prevents the need for aggressive washing.

3. Choose a Front-Loader Washer

Top-loaders agitate too violently and can damage down clusters. Front-loaders use gentler tumbling. Use a mesh bag if available to add extra protection. Set the machine to a gentle or delicate cycle with lukewarm water (60-80°F).

4. Use the Right Amount of Cleaner

Follow Nikwax Down Wash instructions exactly—usually 1-2 teaspoons per wash. Excess soap attracts dirt and reduces loft. Run two extra rinse cycles to ensure all cleaner is gone. Soap residue is worse than mild dirt.

5. Dry Thoroughly

This is critical. Wet down can develop mold and odor. Use a dryer on the lowest heat setting. Add three tennis balls or wool dryer balls to break up clumping. Run for 30 minutes, then remove and fluff by hand. Run another 30-minute cycle. Repeat if needed until completely dry. The entire process takes 2-4 hours.

6. Air Dry Afterward

Once dry, hang the bag in a well-ventilated space for 24 hours. This eliminates any residual moisture and allows down to fully re-loft.

How Often

Wash your down bag every 3-5 years if you use it regularly. If you only use it during annual trips, every 5-7 years is acceptable. More frequent washing accelerates wear, so don't overdo it. Always allow at least one month between washes.

What NOT to Do

  • Never dry clean. Solvents damage down permanently.
  • Never use fabric softener. It coats down and prevents lofting.
  • Never wring or squeeze the bag violently. Squeeze gently to remove excess water.
  • Never use hot water. It can damage the shell fabric.
  • Never store wet. This guarantees mold within days.

When to Replace Instead

If your bag has permanent wet spots despite proper drying, the down may be damaged beyond recovery. If the shell is torn in multiple places or has extensive wear, washing won't help. Most down bags last 10-15 years with basic care. After that, loft gradually degrades naturally.
